My wife found this in one of my old notebooks from 2016. I don't remember writing it, but I do remember this time of my life. I was about to embark on a new venture, and it was daunting. It seemed really relevant as we approach the end of one year and the beginning of another:
When we are young, we are full of dreams. As we grow up, we watch those dreams die one by one, and unfortunately, we don't replace them at the rate of death. Eventually, we go from having a life full of dreams to a life empty of any goals for our future. We stand on the broken shards of our dead dreams and march day to day toward sweet, blissful death.
But it is time to dream again. It is time to give birth to new dreams that are too big for us to accomplish in one day with no effort.
What is a dream? How is it different from a goal?
A goal can be reached with a little effort and training; a dream requires a life change. Priorities have to shift, and sometimes, friendships have to change, and a life overhaul is not out of the question.
Sometimes, it takes a long time to achieve a dream, but it is worth it. The quality is different, like the difference between a cup of Keurig coffee and a fancy slow-brew fine-ground latte. It takes time to get it right.
Find your dream, your passion, your overwhelming desire for your future. Picture it. Imagine what your life will be like with that dream accomplished. Is it worth the price you'll have to pay to see that dream come true?
If so, fight for it. Take the first step toward making it happen, and then the next, and the next. One step at a time until you start to see progress toward the dream. When you notice the progress, you won't have to force yourself to keep stepping forward because it will come naturally.
Whatever you do, don't stagnate. Don't stand still waiting for something better to come along or for better days.
Dream again.
